New Family-Friendly Bike Routes Transform Koreatown's 6th Street
Flat paths along 6th Street and through local parks give new riders protected space away from heavy traffic.
How we reported this
Koreatown residents started using the new protected bike lanes on 6th Street between Vermont and Western avenues on July 1 for short family rides that stay under three miles.
City data from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation shows bike counts on those blocks rose 22 percent in the first week of July compared with the same period last year. Local wellness groups link the jump to rising summer temperatures that push people outdoors earlier in the day and to a new emphasis on low-impact family fitness at neighborhood centers.
The Koreatown Youth and Community Center at 3727 West 6th Street runs free Saturday morning skills sessions for riders aged eight and older. Participants meet at the center entrance then follow the marked lane east to Normandie Avenue before looping back through the small park at 3rd Street and Kenmore Avenue. A second route begins at the same center and heads south on Oxford Street to the open lot behind the Koreatown Plaza shopping center, where riders can practice balance drills on a flat 0.8-mile circuit.
Protected lanes and low-cost rentals
Both routes use concrete barriers installed by the city in spring 2025 that separate cyclists from car lanes. The barriers run for 1.4 miles on 6th Street and connect directly to the park entrance at Kenmore. Local bike shop K-Town Cycles on Western Avenue rents child trailers for $12 a day and adult bikes for $18, with helmets included. The shop recorded 340 rentals in June, up from 210 in May.
Program staff at the youth center report that 87 families signed up for the July beginner series, which meets at 8 a.m. to avoid afternoon heat. Riders must wear bright vests supplied by the center and stay in groups of no more than eight.
Next steps for families
Parents can pick up a printed map at the Koreatown Youth and Community Center front desk or download the same route file from the center website. The next free skills session is scheduled for July 12 at 8 a.m. Riders are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for a quick helmet check and to confirm their bike lights work before heading out on the 6th Street lane.
